Painter Marie Thibeault, formerly of the San Francisco Bay Area and based for many years now in Los Angeles, is Professor of Art at California State University Long Beach and a recipient of multiple grants from that institution. In her work over the years, Thibeault has used source images of natural and man-made catastrophes such as Hurricane Katrina, often from newspaper clippings, as her starting point-catalysts to paintings with a narrative content akin to journalism. Remarkably, she does this while treading on the border of pure abstraction. She manages this balance through densely worked canvases, marked by improvised gestural overlay, sophisticated color juxtapositions, flatly stacked spatial planes, and thicketed drawing.
