Find out about this festive Mexican and Latin American holiday during "Día de Los Muertos Family Discovery Day" at the museum, from noon to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 29th. You'll explore the history and meaning of this lively cultural tradition that celebrates those who have passed on with an abundance of skulls, skeletons, flowers, candles, family, and fun. El Día de Los Muertos is an annual event best known for artistic affirmations that cast light on the continuity of human experience. Activities suitable for the entire family include art workshops, interactive storytelling and hands-on educational fun-crafts. All activities and materials are free to participants. Children and adults alike are encouraged to participate, exercising your own creative expressions and learning about the meanings behind el Día de Los Muertos. This event is held in conjunction with "Bittersweet Harvest: The Bracero Program, 1942-1964," a multi-faceted exhibition about the largest guest worker program in U.S. history, including both the exploitation and opportunity it brought to millions of Mexican nationals, examined through powerful photographs by Leonard Nadel, explanatory text, and audio excerpts from bracero oral histories, August 25 through October 30, 2011.

"Bittersweet Harvest: The Bracero Program, 1942-1964," was organized by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, and circulated by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES), with funding made possible by the Smithsonian’s Latino Center. The Smithsonian Community Grant program, funded by MetLife Foundation, is a proud sponsor of these public programs.
