The public is invited to boogie down at an exclusive mod preview party to introduce the San Bernardino County Museum’s newest special exhibit, “Turn Turn Turn: social movements 1965–1975,” on Friday evening, March 25 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The exhibit opens to the public on Saturday, March 26 and will run through November 6.

The theme for this party is “There’s Something Happening Here.” The evening will include a Taquista Bar and no-host margaritas from 6 to 8 p.m. hosted by Jose’s Mexican Food, and dancing to all your favorite old school tunes with Your Music Team KCAA Radio featuring the fabulous Fred Plimley, DJ Freddie G., and West Coast Lil’ V. Guests are encouraged to dress in their favorite 1960s and ‘70s threads. Form your own social movement and make a handbill. You be the star in our hip photo booth.

“Turn Turn Turn” incorporates three exhibits in one. “Scene in the Sun” features newspaper photos from the Sun Telegram that capture social movements in the Inland Empire during this turbulent decade. “Community Chronicles” showcases meaningful objects, video, and reminiscences of community members during the late 1960s and early 1970s. “Be a part of it! Share your experience by contributing something to the mix as a loan,” said Michele Nielsen, curator of history. You can contact her at (909) 307-2669 x 240 to discuss your “experience.”

The third exhibit is “Chicano Photographer 1970–75”, the work of professional photographer and activist Jesús Manuel Mena Garza. His dynamic images capture events he witnessed and was a part of as he traveled throughout the southwest and Mexico over this pivotal five year time-frame.

“’There’s Something Happening Here’ will be a true ‘happening’,” said Michele Nielsen, the museum’s curator of history. “It will be a great bash, and it will also provide an opportunity to chat with Jesús Garza about his photography and with me about ‘Community Chronicles’ and how guests can share their own memories of this decade of social change.”

“There’s Something Happing Here” is free for members of the San Bernardino County Museum Association. The cost is $10/person for non-members. Reservations are required: call Kamelyta Plimley at (909) 307-2669 ext. 227. “Turn Turn Turn” and the opening night party are sponsored in part by the Museum Association, Jose’s Mexican Food, and the San Bernardino Public Employees Association.
