In conjunction with "Humanitas:Images of India by Fredric Roberts", the museum is featuring a talk by the photographer. Join the artist as he shares his career in photography and his travels within India. Roberts will provide insight into the "Humanitas" images and the people he encountered. He states that the photographs are of ordinary life during daily events and ceremonies. His art reveals the intimacy and community of place.

    In Fredric Roberts’ words:

Many years of traveling throughout the world, including many so-called third world countries, taught me the clear lesson that material wealth does not necessarily result in a truly rich life. Few countries exemplify this more than India.

While we have all seen many instances of painful, indeed excruciating poverty, there are many more examples of people who are living lives of beauty, family devotion, spirituality, creativity and, indeed happiness, albeit at nearly the subsistence level. It is these people, the vast majority of Indians, whom I photograph – in their homes and villages, in the fields, at work, at prayer – as they are. Everyday people, whom I find to be beautiful – and rich.

I first visited India in 1974, but it was not until 2000, when, after 30 years in the finance industry, I began my career in photography. Only then did I have the proper vehicle to express my feelings about the true nature of the richness of life. In my first life, I was surrounded by people who wanted everything that money could buy. Now I photograph people who have everything that money can’t buy.
