In celebration of the Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos), social critic , media artist, and filmmaker John Jota Leaños unmasks the folly of American imperialism in his lively dead opera, “Imperial Silence”. Leaños’ underworld multi-media-adventureland is packed with tricks and treats including dark-humored animation, dead mariachis, Mexican folklore dancers, and a satirical libretto sung by calacas (skeletons). This mordant adaptation of the Chicano/a tradition of the dead returning to mock the living, parodies America’s history of war, silence, and death.
