"Water in the Desert" features submissions for a photography contest that was sponsored by Cadiz, Inc., a land and water resource development company headquartered in Los Angeles. Cadiz opened the competition to any community college student in the San Bernardino and Riverside Counties. The theme for the competition was water in the desert, an open-ended concept that the students could creatively interpret through photography. The photographs are primarily landscapes that were shot in natural settings throughout Joshua Tree, Coachella Valley, and the Salton Sea. The idea behind the contest was to bring attention to the complicated relationship that people have with water, to explore the watershed cycle, and to promote water awareness and conservation.
