February 26, 2010
Add Review/Comment
Visitors are invited to walk the grounds and tour the historic Yucaipa Adobe in Yucaipa with San Bernardino County Museum Curator of History Michele Nielsen at 1pm on Friday, February 26. This program is open to the public free of charge. “Yucaipa Adobe has an interesting story, and fascinating artifacts that reveal much about this region’s past” said Nielsen. “Visitors will have the opportunity to discover why mud and straw are excellent building materials, and to explore the lives of those who have lived here over the years, through the artifacts. The interior spaces are filled with objects that relate to these families. Memorial artwork made of human hair, unusual furniture, and cooking gadgets that Iron Chefs might have used 100 years ago will be part of the tour.” A California State Historical Landmark #528, Yucaipa Adobe was once owned by James Waters, the noted hunter, trapper, and mountaineer. The adobe home and ranch were purchased in 1869 by John Dunlap, a Texas cattleman. Today, the adobe contains furnishings from the 1840s rancho era through the late nineteenth century. The Yucaipa Adobe, a San Bernardino County Museum historic site, is at 32183 Kentucky Street in Yucaipa, just north of Interstate 10. This curatorial walk is free of charge. For more information, contact the San Bernardino County Museum at (909) 307-2669 x 240 or visit www.sbcountymuseum.org.
