Southern African Literature: A Survey of South African Writers

An introduction to one or more of the major forms of South African literature and to selected works and authors such as Bessie Head (Maru), Alan Paton (Cry the Beloved Country),J.S. Coetzee (Disgraced), Zakes Mda (Heart of Redness) and Nadine Gordima. The course will further explore culturally specific heritages, perspectives, histories and belief systems that influenced the writers. Also covered are the literary conventions, themes, and techniques employed by these authors in a variety of genres such as short story, novel poetry, and the essay.
