The Tree of Life

At 2pm on Sunday, August 30, join Curator of Geology J. Chris Sagebiel for a lecture, “The Tree of Life,” at the San Bernardino County Museum. Sagebiel will provide a preview of exhibits currently planned for the museum’s new Hall of Geological Wonders. “The classification of organisms has changed drastically over our lifetime,” said Sagebiel. “Birds are dinosaurs. People and other mammals are viewed as highly specialized fish. Elephants are more closely related to tiny elephant shrews than to almost any other living organism. What is behind this shift in scientific thinking? What do we do with this information?” In his lecture, Sagebiel will demonstrate how our perspectives and knowledge of evolutionary history have changed in recent years. He will explore the methods used by biologists and paleontologists to construct the tree of life. And he will investigate some of the surprises revealed by recent fossil discoveries and modern genetic analyses.

  Tickets: Admission is $8 (adult), $6 (military or senior), $5 (student), and $4 (child aged 5 to 12). Children under five and Museum Association members are admitted free.
