One thing’s for sure. When Greater Tuna rolls into town on Thursday, September 3rd, audiences will be treated to an astonishing tour de force of comic acting. But if you’ve been living under a rock and somehow haven’t heard about this world-famous comedy romp, well, here’s the deal: Two performers who are part actor and part quick-change artist dominate the hilarious – and often strange – activity that comprises a typical day in Tuna, Texas - the Lone Star State’s “third-smallest city,” where the Lion’s Club is deemed “too liberal” and Patsy Cline never dies. In fact, it takes a team of lightning-fast “dressers” backstage to help create the twenty-odd oddballs who represent the population of the entire Greater Tuna Area – men, women, children, and animals. Some quick-changes occur in fewer than four seconds. The show opens with the morning news report from the low-power radio station, OKKK (275 watts) hosted by two slow-talking broadcast celebrities – Thurston Wheelis and Arles Struvie – who keep the town up-to-date on Tuna’s late-breaking news. The play then quick-changes to all the various news scenes and crime scenes around town. For instance, Judge Buckner dies under mysterious circumstances, Vera Carp and her censorship club (the Smut Snatchers of the New Order) meet to censor the dictionary, town drunk R.R. Snavely spots a UFO shaped like a bean burrito, the Tuna Little Theatre performs “My Fair Lady” using the scenery and costumes from “South Pacific” and the town’s one-man Humane Society launches an urgent campaign to rescue homeless ducks. Coyote StageWorks, Palm Springs’ newest theatre company will present their inaugural production of Greater Tuna, written by Jaston Williams, Joe Sears and Ed Howard. Larry Raben directs the hilarity, which is swiftly performed by Alan Denny and Chuck Yates. All three men are Coyote StageWorks founding members.
