May 30, 2009
Add Review/Comment
Come experience work and play like Californians did in the 1800s! On Saturday, May 30, families can make history at the Yucaipa Adobe in Yucaipa during “Adobe Day” from 11am to 2pm. Organized by the San Bernardino County Museum’s Education and History divisions, this living history event is free of charge. Visitors of all ages will be able to beat a rug, clean clothes with a tub and washboard, cross-stitch a bookmark, make an adobe brick to take home, play old-time games, dip a candle, and create a whirly gig or corn husk doll to play with. The historic Yucaipa Adobe will also be open for tours. This museum historic site, California State Historical Landmark #528, was owned once by James Waters, the noted hunter, trapper, and mountaineer. The adobe home and ranch were purchased in 1869 by John Dunlap, a Texas cattleman. Today, the adobe contains furnishings from the 1840s rancho era through the late nineteenth century. It is surrounded by landscaped grounds, and visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch during Adobe Day. The Yucaipa Adobe is at 32183 Kentucky Street in Yucaipa, just north of Interstate 10. For more information, call (909) 795-3485 or contact the San Bernardino County Museum at (909) 307-2669. No admission fee is charged. For more information call (909) 307-2669 ext. 271, or visit www.sbcountymuseum.org.
