How did people make toast before electric toasters were invented? How did people open cans without can openers? Visit the San Bernardino County Museum on Saturday, February 14 from 11am to 4pm for a family fun day of “Gizmos and Gadgets.” This event is free with museum admission. Visitors can join in “cartivities” with museum interpreters. Go “back to the drawing board” and design your own invention – and then build a model of it! Pick a problem and invent something to fix it. Explore how advertising can affect your “need” for new inventions. Play “What-the-Heck-is-That?” “This isn’t just for kids – adults will shake their heads at some of the kooky gadgets we have,” said Museum Educator Nancy Kirkwood. “Some will have you wondering – what on earth is that thing? And after you figure them out, you may be inspired to try out your own inventing skills with some of our materials.” “Gadgets and Gizmos: inventing the modern world,” is a new special exhibit that will open on February 14 and run through November 1, 2009. The exhibit features objects from the museum history collections that illustrate how inventions and innovations from the dawn of the industrial age to the 1950s reflect changes in social structures and expectations for a “modern” lifestyle.
