Portraits of an Artist: Drawings by Herbert Olds

This solo exhibition features the work of Herbert Olds, who is considered by the art world to be one of the country's finest draftsmen. His mixed media drawings are large scale and complex, filled with layer upon layer of disparate imagery, juxtaposed in unexpected ways. Olds' drawings also commonly feature Olds himself, in which his art acts as a visual chronicle of his physical, personal, and artistic development throughout the years. Olds is not the first artist in art's history to create self-portraits consistently throughout his career; most well known for also doing this was 17th century Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijn. Rembrandt appears often in Olds' work, which makes for an interesting parallel between the artistic intent of Rembrandt and Olds.
