Book Discussion at the County Museum
January 14, 2009
Add Review/Comment
On Wednesday January 14 at 7:30pm, the San Bernardino County Museum’s Reading Discoveries program will discuss “The Botany of Desire,” by Michael Pollan. This book discussion program is free and open to public. In his book, Michael Pollan illustrates the complex and reciprocal relationship between humans and the natural world by focusing on some everyday plants – apples, potatoes and others. The author asserts that through human tinkering, these plants have become totally dependent on humans for their survival. In fact, each plant species has come to benefit and thrive in this human-plant relationship. “Pollan offers a fascinating point of view in this book,” said Jolene Redvale, the museum’s curator of education. “For example, humans have bred over 7,000 types of apples, all through the process of selective breeding over hundreds of years. Not one of them would be able to be maintained for several hundred more years living wild and without human assistance.” Reading Discoveries meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 7:30p.m. The discussion group is open to the public free of charge. For more information about the discussion group, contact Jolene Redvale at (909) 307-2669 ext. 252 or e-mail jredvale@sbcm.sbcounty.gov.
