On Wednesday, January 28 at the San Bernardino County Museum, join David Earle for a special guest lecture, “Excavations in Peru.” This presentation will be at 7:30pm, and is free to the public. Earle will describe an archaeological project carried out in Acarí, on the south coast of Peru, involving excavation of an early colonial Spanish church built out of a pre-existing Inka building. This building was part of an Inka tambo, or administrative center on the Inka coastal royal highway, built after the Inka conquered the local coastal native lord. It was constructed using ancient local indigenous adobe and cobble “pirca” techniques. Combining the archaeological and archival research, Earle will give visitors glimpses of what life was like in this Inka-Spanish town center in early colonial days. David Earle teaches anthropology at Antelope Valley College, Lancaster, and runs a consulting business in anthropology and cultural resource management. He has carried out ethnographic research with native people in California and the Andes of South America, and has done archaeological and ethnohistorical research in those areas as well. His research in Peru has involved work with a field archaeology program from Antelope Valley College, and archival work in Peru and Spain. He is especially interested in pre-historic and historic adobe architecture in southern Peru, and in prehistoric cotton production in Peru, Colombia, and central Mexico.
