Real life western star Annie Oakley leaps to rip-roaring life onstage in Annie Get Your Gun, in the latest production at Performance Riverside. With lyrics and music written by Irving Berlin and a book by Herbert Fields and Dorothy Fields, it’s based on the real life story of wild-west legend Annie Oakley and Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show. The production is directed and choreographed by John Vaughan and musically directed by Scott T. Smith. Performances will be at Landis Performing Arts Center on the campus of Riverside City College, November 7-16, 2008. The 1946 Broadway production of Annie Get Your Gun was a runaway hit with the legendary Ethel Merman, and was successfully revived on Broadway in 1966 and 1999. It also spawned a 1950 film version and television versions in 1957 and 1966. When the legendary Buffalo Bill Cody discovers Annie’s uncanny talent with a rifle, she joins his Wild West Show, only to fall head over heels for shooting ace Frank Butler, who headlines the show. She soon eclipses Butler as the main attraction which, while good for business, is bad for romance. Butler high-tails it off to join a rival show but is ultimately pitted against Annie in a final shoot-out. The score is generally considered Irving Berlin’s finest and contains the songs, “There’s No Business, Like Show Business”, “Doin’ What Comes Naturally”, and “Anything You Can Do (I Can Do Better).”
