On Sunday, October 5, historian Robert Gonzalez Vasquez will be at the San Bernardino County Museum starting at 12 pm, presenting his current project “From the Ground Up: Inland Mexican Heritage & Community History.” Admission to the museum is free that day. This presentation will highlight 15 years of archive, public history, and humanities work conducted by Vasquez, including clips from his upcoming documentary video, as well as an exhibit of images and materials from Living on the Dime and the Redlands Oral History Project. At 2 pm, Vasquez will present a lecture on this project in the Fisk Gallery. Vasquez created the groundbreaking Redlands Oral History Project, an oral memoir and photo archive collection focusing on the historic importance of Mexican barrios in the Inland Empire. Building on that landmark work, Vasquez founded Inland Mexican Heritage (www.mexicanheritage.org) in 2001 to promote community-based scholarship and to continue research and development of media projects and archive materials. In 2006, he founded Panchebek Media to produce and distribute his work. Currently, Vasquez is completing a documentary film, “Living on the Dime,” based on a 3-year environmental and cultural research project about the effects of the Interstate 10 freeway on the communities of Inland Southern California. He is also preparing a pictorial history of Mexican communities in the East San Bernardino Valley. A native of California, Vasquez resides in Joshua Tree, California and Las Vegas, New Mexico. His work as a documentary historian is based on his interests in migration, community development, environmental and social justice, and issues of cultural and ethnic identity. In addition to exhibits of cultural and natural history relating to inland Southern California and the southwest, visitors can enjoy special exhibits: “All That Glitters: a century of razzle-dazzle,” “A Feast for the Eyes: dining in style, 1860s to 1940s,” “Sticks and Stones: vernacular architecture in San Bernardino County,” and “A Piece of My Heart: samplers from the collections.” Free admission is sponsored by the San Bernardino County Fourth District.
