The Great California Shakeout

Visitors are invited to the San Bernardino County Museum on Sunday, September 28 at 2pm, for a presentation by Senior Curator of Geology Kathleen Springer, “The Great California Shakeout.” This presentation is free with museum admission. “Southern Californians literally live on the edge thanks to the San Andreas fault,” said Springer. “Earthquakes occur frequently within the San Andreas system–more than 200 earthquakes greater than 6.0 magnitude are known since 1769. However, the southern section of the main trace of the San Andreas Fault has not broken since the huge Fort Tejon quake in 1857. This ‘locked’ section of the San Andreas, south of Parkfield and north of the Salton Sea, ruptures about every 150 years.” This lecture will also provide background information for participants registered for the museum’s field trip to the San Andreas Fault from Redlands to Los Angeles County, scheduled for November 1. It will also offer a sneak preview of fault-related exhibits planned for the museum’s Hall of Geological Wonders, now under construction. The San Andreas Fault is the setting for the “Great Southern California ShakeOut”, the largest disaster preparedness drill in California history, which will take place on Thursday, November 13. In addition to the public lectures and field trips leading up to the “ShakeOut,” the San Bernardino County Museum will host events on that day. On Saturday, November 2, families with children ages 3 to 12 can join in the Family Fun Day “Earthquake” for age-appropriate activities at the museum. For more information about the drill, go to www.ShakeOut.org. Kathleen Springer is the Senior Curator of Geology for the San Bernardino County Museum. She has an extensive background in both geology and paleontology and has been with the San Bernardino County Museum for nearly 19 years leading geologic and paleontologic investigations throughout southern California, Arizona, and Nevada.
