Come to the San Bernardino County Museum in Redlands and experience the ancient, battered surface of the moon through the telescopes of the San Bernardino Valley Amateur Astronomers on Saturday, August 9, from 8:30 to 10pm. This event is free to public. The first-quarter phase of the moon reveals some of the most vivid detail ever seen on the lunar surface, as long shadows bring out in vivid relief the features found along the terminator. Mountains, valleys, and craters will jump out in stark contrast, creating a three-dimensional appearance. “The giant planet, Jupiter, will also be visible,” said Chris Clarke, Program Coordinator for the San Bernardino Valley Amateur Astronomers. “Participants will see its slightly flattened disk (caused by the rapid rotation of its 10-hour long day) covered with stripes and bands and maybe even the famed ‘great red spot,’ a huge cyclone-like feature big enough to drop two Earths into! Easily seen moving around the great planet are its four largest moons, which noticeably change position over short periods of time, creating the famed ‘dance of the moons.’”
