Museum Curator to Discuss Horses
July 6, 2008
Add Review/Comment“Horses–America’s Most Export–Ever!” is the subject of a lecture at the San Bernardino County Museum on Sunday, July 6. Curator of Paleontology Eric Scott will do the presentation at 2pm. Visitors will also enjoy free museum admission, made possible by the San Bernardino County 1st District. America has always been a land of riches. Yet one of our continent's most successful and long-established exports is often unacknowledged–and is even thought by some to be of foreign origin! This 'export', the horse, however, is native to North America, having originated here more than fifty million years ago. From humble beginnings as a small marshland creature, horses have grown tall and proud, conquering almost every continent across the globe. “People often think the first Spanish explorers brought horses to America,' said Scott. “But it wasn't really an introduction, since horses originated here on this continent. It was more like old friends becoming reacquainted. Why was such a reintroduction necessary? What happened to horses in North America at the end of the Ice Ages, and why did they go extinct?” Join Scott for a deep and fascinating look at the prehistory of these amazing animals. In addition to exhibits of cultural and natural history relating to inland Southern California and the southwest, visitors can enjoy special exhibits: “All That Glitters: a century of razzle-dazzle,” “A Feast for the Eyes: dining in style, 1860s to 1940s,” “Sticks and Stones: vernacular architecture in San Bernardino County,” and “A Piece of My Heart: samplers from the collectors.” The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. The museum is open Tuesdays through Sundays and holiday Mondays from 9 am to 5 pm. Everyone is admitted free on Sunday, July 6. Parking is free. For more information, visit www.sbcountymuseum.org.
