A Piece of My Heart

Indulge the true ambition to excel in that best art, the art of living well. While this statement might sound like a tag line used to advertise a luxury consumer product, it was stitched on a hand-worked fabric sampler dating to 1809. This unusual form of textile art gives insight into the lives of people in the heyday of samplers in the United States, around two hundred years ago. A special exhibit of samplers, “A Piece of My Heart,” opens May 3 at the San Bernardino County Museum in Redlands. The exhibit, scheduled to run through July 6 and free with museum admission, focuses on samplers that are part of the permanent textile collections in the museum’s history division. “Some samplers contain verses like that above, or alphabet and number sequences, and fanciful designs including buildings, animals, flowers, and scenes from the natural world,” said Michele Nielsen, the museum’s curator of history. “Others demonstrate sewing skills like darning stitches or other decorative techniques. Many include the name, age, and hometown of the girls who worked them.”
