La Sierra University’s World Languages Department will host Cuban-born poet Rita Geada who will talk about and read her poetry. Geada will conduct the entire presentation in Spanish. The event will take place at La Sierra Hall, Room 222 at La Sierra University, 4500 Riverwalk Parkway, Riverside. A campus map is at http://www.lasierra.edu/resources/campusmap/. As part of the Generation of ‘60 (poets and writers who left Cuba when Fidel Castro took power), her poems are existential meditations that include such themes as nostalgia for the homeland, love, loss and betrayal. Geada received her doctorate from the University of Havana and conducted post-doctoral work at the University of Buenos Aires. Her short stories and poems have been translated into English, Italian, Portuguese, and French and included in several anthologies. She has published numerous literary essays and is a recipient of the prestigious “Carabela de Oro” (Spain) literary prize for her book, “Mascaradas.” She also received the 2001 International Luis Santamarina City of Cieza prize for “Espejo de la Tierra.”
