Birds of the Salton Sea
January 12, 2008
Add Review/CommentOn Saturday, January 12, Museum Director Robert McKernan will present a lecture, “Birds of the Salton Sea,” at the San Bernardino County Museum at 2pm. The lecture is free with museum admission. The Salton Sea is a vital part of the Rio Colorado Delta region, including the northern Gulf of California, and contains some of the highest biological diversity in the southwestern United States. “This is particularly true for birds,” said Museum Director Robert McKernan. “To date, 402 native and 5 non-native bird species have been recorded in the Salton Sea area, including about 100 breeding species. In addition, the sheer number of birds using the Salton Sea at various time of the year is particularly noteworthy.” Surveys conducted by the San Bernardino County Museum in the 1980s and 1990s suggest that a minimum of one million water birds inhabit the Salton Sea in winter. While this number is striking, the museum has recorded a remarkable 3.7 million birds using the Salton Sea during certain surveys. Robert McKernan has been conducting ornithological investigation at the Salton Sea and adjacent habitats for nearly 30 years. His presentation will provide a background to future visits to the sea, whether for bird watching, fishing, sightseeing, or water recreation. He will lead a Museum Association field trip to the Salton Sea on Saturday, February 2.
