On Wednesday, January 23, Dr. Elizabeth Cochran of the University of California, Riverside will give a guest lecture titled “Faults in the Mojave,” at the San Bernardino County Museum in Redlands. The 7:30 pm lecture is open to public and free of charge. Dr. Cochran will discuss recent seismic data and satellite imagery from faults in the Mojave Desert. She will provide a glimpse into what a fault looks like deep underground, as well as the millimeter-to-meter scale ground deformation resulting from a large earthquake. This talk will show that fault damage extends across a much larger zone than previously thought. Dr. Elizabeth Cochran is an assistant professor in the Earth Sciences at the University of California, Riverside. She earned her Ph.D. at the University of California Los Angeles and received the 2006 Outstanding Woman in Science award from the Geological Society of America. Her research interests include determining the structure of faults using seismic and remote sensing data, triggering of earthquakes, and development of innovative seismic networks for early warning. The San Bernardino County Museum sponsors its guest lecture series to share current research by prominent researchers and scholars with the public. Scheduled for this year’s series are Mark Allen on archaeological research in the Western Mojave (February 27), Daphne Fairbairn on animal sexual dimorphism (March 26), Devra Weber on Mexicana farm laborers (April 23), Doug Alshuler on animal evolution (May 28), and Robert Gonzales on Living on the Dime (June 25).
