Between Ecology & Entropy: Rondal Partridge’s Quizzical Vision of California This program is in conjunction with the exhibit: From the Byways to the Highways, Rondal Partridge Photographs California 1936-1969. Join Sally Stein, as she speaks about the photography of Rondal Partridge in, “Between Ecology & Entropy: Rondal Partridge’s Quizzical Vision of California.” Photographers have always faced the dilemma of focusing on the natural or the social world. In the photography of Rondal Partridge, we can see the way he resists making a clear-cut choice. Instead, with the ardent precision of a naturalist and the sardonic humor of a chronicler of the divinely human comedy, this photographer has resolved to encompass both nature and culture as he saw these strong forces interacting since his teens in the 1930s to the present. Combining a profound sense of tradition with an abiding curiosity about all that is innovative, Partridge relishes chronicling with his camera the way old-timers, newcomers, and new generations have made homes and lives in California, in the process reshaping the very contours of this ever diverse state.
