Rogers and Hammerstein were at the height of their powers when they adapted Anna and the King of Siam to the musical stage. It's the real life story of Anna Leonowens, who became the school teacher to the children of King Mongkut of Siam in the early 1860s, told with impeccable taste, charming lyrics, and exquisite dancing. This dazzling meld of Eastern and Western elements starred Gertrude Lawrence as Anna, and a mostly unknown Yul Brynner as the King. This show won the 1952 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Actress (musical), Best Scenic Design and Best Costume Design, and the 1996 Tony Awards for Best Actress (musical), Best Costume Design, Best Scenic Design, and Best Revival (musical).
