On Wednesday, May 23 at 7:30 p.m., the San Bernardino County Museum will present a guest lecture titled “Converting California,” presented by author James Sandos. This lecture is free to the public. Sandos will provide a richly contextualized history of the California missions from their inception under Junipero Serra in 1769 to the time of their secularization in 1836. The author will examine the material and political goals of the Franciscans, and their theological and cosmological understandings of the world around them. James Sandos is a professor of history and the Farquhar Professor of the Southwest at the University of Redlands. He earned a Ph.D. in history from University of California, Berkeley. He is the author of “Converting California: Indians and Franciscans in the Missions,” and “The Hunt for Willie Boy: Indian-hating and Popular Culture” (with Larry Burgess) and has contributed many articles and chapters on California and California Indian history, and the Spanish borderlands with the United States. This program is part of a series of guest lectures offered at no charge by the county museum. The next guest lecture will be on June 27 when Alexis Gray speaks on “Biological Anthropology and Forensics.”
