Through the Looking Glass gallery talk

On Sunday, May 6 at 2 pm, Curator of History Michele Nielsen will give a gallery talk on a special exhibit, “Through the Looking Glass,” at the San Bernardino County Museum. The museum is celebrating International Museum Day on Sunday, and admission is free. “Through the Looking Glass” features children’s clothing from the 1850s to 1940s from tiny shoes to christening gowns. The clothing and accessories in the exhibit are selected from the history division’s extensive collection of costumes and textiles. Nielsen will talk about designs, concepts, fabrics, and how the clothing evolved over the years. “Historically, children’s clothing reflected both the designs and the fabrics of their elders,” said Nielsen. “In this exhibit, several examples of dresses from as late as 1860s feature off-the-shoulder styling, just like the adult women wore in the same period. Even fabrics such as silk and wool were used in children’s garments.”
