“HardSoft: Youth Video from Riverside” features computer produced digital stories; autobiographical narratives made simply from photographs and voice-record audio. These touching and at times haunting video works were made during the past year by Riverside youth taking part in workshops organized by the Riverside Arts Council. The teens in the Arlanza workshop were recruited through Project BRIDGE, a gang intervention and suppression program. The middle school students at Auburndale Intermediate were members of “Opportunity Club,” a classroom for youth at risk of expulsion due to disruptive behavior, yet given another chance. There are also several digital stories made by students who didn’t participate in the original workshops, but wanted to have their stories told. Each student was encouraged to discuss his or her life, from birth through high school, mixing recollections, regrets, and hopes. The hands-on media workshops took place in 2006 at the Arlanza Community Center in Riverside and Auburndale Intermediate School in Corona. Other funders include the California Arts Council, Target Stores, Union Pacific Foundation, Employees Community Fund of Boeing California, and the Fieldstone Foundation. The Auburndale project was done in collaboration with Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program of the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office. The video screening from 6:00 to 8:30 PM will take place alongside two other ARTSBLOCK events. The Riverside Arts Council’s mission is to promote, develop, support, and sustain the arts. The Arts Council is dedicated to all of the performing, visual, and literary arts and works to unify the arts scene throughout Riverside. By building partnerships among local arts organizations, government agencies, schools and other social service organizations, the Arts Council helps to ensure the City and County of Riverside remain a creative, economically vital region.
