UCR/CMP Collections: No More Heroes Curated by Jason Chakravarty and Ciara Ennis April 28, 2007-July 27, 2007 Opening Reception: April 28, 2007, 7-9pm No More Heroes explores the phenomenon of iconic sports heroes—how they materialize in society and the qualities they embody that are revered. The exhibition presents traditional images of sporting activities and stars drawn from the CMP’s Keystone-Mast and Will Connell collections that include Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jack Dempsey, and Amelia Earhart, juxtaposed with newspaper articles from the past 30 years pasted floor-to-ceiling on the gallery walls. Cataloguing the scandals and disgraces of our contemporary sports heroes, the newspaper reports highlight a range of nefarious activities from cocaine and steroid abuse to murder and kidnapping charges. Heroes exist as the embodiment of an impossible ideal—beings with superhuman strength, skill, endurance, or bravery, and are most effective in their symbolic and metaphoric power at times of crisis. Seabiscuit—the under-valued scrawny colt of Man of War—was the most written about public figure in 1938, and despite his small stature and flawed physiology achieved unsurpassed greatness, becoming a unifying symbol of hope and inspiration for the entire country. Given today’s turbulent social and political climate, our need for a hero is immense. However, we are more likely to be acquainted with our hero’s drug habits and sordid scandals than we are with their heroic talents.
