On Sunday, May 13, join Curator of Paleontology Eric Scott for a special lecture, “Waters of Life, Valley of Death: Fossil from China Lake.” This 2:00 p.m. presentation at San Bernardino County Museum is free with museum admission. The China Lake Naval Air Weapons Station is in the northern Mojave Desert, west of Death Valley at the southern end of the Owens River. Within and around the station, lake sediments of late Pleistocene age have yielded abundant but fragmentary and wind-blasted remains of extinct Ice Age animals, as well as lithics and tools left behind by early Americans. “Did people coexist with the Ice Age behemoths?” asked Scott. “And if so, did they hunt them to extinction?” Join Scott as he reviews the history of paleontology studies at China Lake and the surrounding region, and discusses the museum’s ongoing studies at this fascinating site.
