Tiffany by Design

An exhibition featuring lamps, one leaded-glass window, and other related materials made by Louis C. Tiffany of Tiffany Studios. The show explores the construction, fabrication, design, and qualities of Tiffany lamps made between 1900 and 1925. Louis C. Tiffany opened his furnaces in Corona, Queens in 1892 to make colored, opalescent glass under the trademark name, Favrile. Capitalizing on the increasing availability of electricity, Tiffany developed artificially illuminated colored glass lampshades. The opalescent character of his glass diffused light and the method of creating the lampshades came from techniques that were used to make leaded glass windows. The exhibit is from the Neustadt Museum of Tiffany Art, Long Island City, NY and curated by Nina Gray. Public Opening: April 5, from 6 - 9 pm during Arts Walk A special lecture, “Louis Comfort Tiffany and His Quest for Beauty” presented by Lindsy Parrot will be held on April 4, from 4:00 – 5:00 pm at the Mission Inn. This lecture will provide an overview of Tiffany’s career and artistic works, with a special look at his windows in the Mission Inn and participation in the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition.
