"Li Zhensheng—Red Color News Soldier" is the first in-depth visual testament to the brutality and mass chaos that swept through China during the Cultural Revolution (1966-76). Zhensheng’s employment at the Heilongjiang Daily, a newspaper turned-propaganda machine during the revolution, and his decision to wear a red arm-band showing an alliance with Chairman Mao Zedong allowed him rare access to scenes which have since been only described in written and verbal accounts. The bold images in "Li Zhensheng—Red-Color News Soldier" provides visual evidence for many of the human rights atrocities that occurred during the Cultural Revolution, as well as showing the prolific nature of revolutionary ideals and actions in China during this chaotic time. The Heilongjiang Daily had a strict policy in accordance with the government that only "positive" images could be published, resulting in many images of smiling revolutionaries offering praise for Chairman Mao. The "negative" images taken by Zhensheng were hidden beneath a floorboard in his one-room apartment, and remained there while he and his wife were sent to the Chinese “gulag” in 1969, to spend two years of hard labor. Zhensheng finally showed these secret images to the public for the first time at the Chinese Press Association's photography competition in 1988. Graphically depicting the mass chaos and hysteria of the revolutionary days, the images of "Li Zhensheng—Red Color News Soldier" remain as fresh, jarring and disturbing today as they were during the chaotic days when they were taken. "Li Zhensheng—Red Color News Solider" at the UCR/California Museum of Photography marks the first showing of this exhibition in the United States.
