As the 50th Anniversary of Riverside’s Sister City relationship with Sendai, Japan begins, Riverside Metropolitan Museum sets out to celebrate the cultural richness of Japan’s traditional textile and costume heritage with its newest exhibition, “A Celebration of Japan’s Textile and Costume Traditions”. The exhibition will honor and explore the roots and beauty of the traditional Japanese garment, the Kimono, as well as other popular Japanese textiles. The exhibition, which will run from March 1 to September 9, 2007, will feature 70 textiles and costumes from two traditions: formal silk fabrics decorated with elaborate patterns and informal cotton fabrics of a much simpler type. As a part of the formal collection, the museum will showcase silk kimonos from the late 19th to 20th century reflecting a variety of decorative techniques from embroidery to figured weaves. Complex designs hallmark these textiles which make their wear acceptable for occasions such as weddings and important ceremonies. Many of the Kimonos and obi (sashes or wide belts, which are tied in the back) are gifts from Riverside’s Sister City Sendai. Also featured are informal textiles (known as mingei in Japan), indigo blue and white patterned cotton Japanese textiles and costumes including: firemen’s coats, farmer’s and wood’s men jackets, padded sleeping kimono, bed covers, children’s clothing, wrapping cloths, and shop curtains that were generally used before Japan became urban and industrialized. The Opening Reception will be on March 1 from 6 pm to 9 pm during Riverside Arts Walk. On March 4th, from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm, Family Fun Day will feature “Asobi/Play” where families are invited to make origami, learn to use chopsticks, play Japanese games, and try on a Kimono. Special guest speaker, Sharon Sadako Takeda, Senior Curator and Department Head of Costumes and Textiles at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art will present “Materials, Motifs, and Meanings: Japanese Textiles in Daily Life” on March 17 at 1:00 pm. On March 24 at 1:00 pm, Speaker Gloria Granz Gonick, Scholar and Researcher of Japanese Festivals and Costumes will present “Matsuri! Japanese Festival Costumes”. Exhibition and events are free and open to the public. For more information, call (951) 826-5273.
