In H.G. Wells’ disturbing vision of the future The Time Machine, humanity is divided into two classes: naive childlike Eloi who live in a pantomime paradise and the trollish Morlocks who manipulate the Eloi to their deaths. As a mirror to our irresistible need to concoct paradises that insulate us from the harsh realities of existence, The Time Machine’s powerful metaphor successfully warns against such futile efforts, more likely to reveal the inadequacies and frailty of our fake constructions than confirm their existence. ELOI: STUMBLING TOWARDS PARADISE brings together a series of compelling photographic works that address our congenital homesickness––some hopefully, others with resignation––by artists Liset Castillo, Miles Coolidge, Todd Hido, Malerie Marder, Tracy Powell, and Alex Slade who question the familiar human concerns of perfection, failure, disillusionment, and redemption.
