At Work: The Art of California Labor

“At Work” offers surprising insights into one of the most fundamental components of our daily lives – work – and shows how our collective identity has evolved over time. Audiences are led on a journey from the early events and conditions that led to the rise of organized labor to issues surrounding the farm worker’s movement on both a local and state-wide level. “At Work: The Art of California Labor” -an exhibition that explores the story of California Labor through original artwork and photographs; high-quality reproductions of historical works; and vintage artifacts highlighting Riverside City’s labor heritage. The exhibition features original artwork and photography by contemporary artists Yolanda Lopez, Ester Hernandez, and Francisco Dominguez, as well as reproductions of historical works by Diego Rivera, Dorothea Lange, and Tina Modotti. In addition, the museum will feature several artifacts from its permanent collection that highlight various professions, industries, and several Riverside City departments from Riverside’s past to present, such as vintage firefighting equipment, antique medical accessories, archival construction photographs, and agricultural elements. The exhibit will be on display from November 9, 2006 to January 2, 2007 at the Riverside Metropolitan Museum located at 3580 Mission Inn Ave. in Riverside.
