The UCR ARTSblock presents “Jason Middlebrook: LIVE BUILDING,” an innovative project taking place December 4 - 16, 2006, over which time the artist will demolish and recycle the “Wurms” building, formerly occupied by the janitorial supply company of the same name. Contemporary artist Jason Middlebrook has exhibited widely throughout Europe and the US; he has had numerous solo and group exhibitions, including a number of site-specific projects such as “The Geology of Biology” at the Wellcome Trust, London, and “Dig” at the New Museum of Contemporary Arts. “LIVE BUILDING” is the interactive and performative event of transforming the Wurms building into reusable furniture for the community, creating useful objects from materials that would’ve otherwise been sent to a landfill. The words “LIVE BUILDING” will be carved into the outside wall, creating a window for the public to view the deconstruction process. The remnants of the building will be bulldozed on Saturday, December 16 as part of the grand finale. There will also be an exhibition in the parking lot to accompany the project.
