Add Review/CommentSERENADE featuring California Consort Chamber Orchestra Old Town Temecula Community Theater Mozart – Serenade #6 in D., K.239 Britten – Serenade, Opus 31 Tchaikovsky – Serenade for Strings and Orchestra in C, Opus 48 What comes to mind when you hear the word “serenade”? Webster defines it as a complimentary performance of music in the open air at night, as by a lover to his lady. But the instrumental serenade can also mean a work scored for small ensembles and sometimes for wind instruments alone. Serenades fall mid-way between symphonies and suites. We have chosen three very distinct examples of how composers have used the term for their music.. A serenade in Mozart’s day usually consisted of a series of loosely connected movements, mostly in dance meters, with a sonata-like opening movement and a lively finale. These charming instrumental pieces were written to provide an evening’s entertainment in a private home and are not usually heard in concert halls. The Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings is a song cycle written in 1943 by the English composer, Benjamin Britten. Composed during World War II, it was inspired by a selection of six British poems on the theme of “evening”. Probably the most famous example is the Tchaikovsky Serenade for Strings, rich with all the melodies and flowing rhythms one would expect from this most Romantic of composers. Beautiful Russian harmonies intertwine, the waltz in the second movement urges us to get up and dance, and its boisterous finale ends our concert.
