Working for a Living: Images of Our Working Past
July 29-November 5, 2006
Add Review/Comment“Working for a Living—images of our working past” will open at the San Bernardino County Museum on Saturday, July 29. The special exhibit, based on images from the museum’s history archives, will run through November 5 and is free with museum admission. Curator of History Michele Nielsen will present a gallery talk based on the exhibit at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 6. “We have selected some fascinating photographs, some over 100 years old, that reveal work environments and job duties in times gone by,” said Nielsen. “Many people do the same kinds of jobs in different ways today. Other occupations are definitely things of the past, or have radically changed along with technology.” The images illustrate people engaged in jobs related to the citrus industry, working in retail establishments, or as bookkeepers, machinists, doctors, and teamsters (of the equine variety). “It is especially interesting to reflect on how the people in these photographs approached their working lives in the context of today’s concerns with job satisfaction, career training, entrepreneurship, and corporate structure,” said Nielsen.
