The Island
February 1, 2007
Add Review/CommentAthol Fugard’s "The Island," is one of the few plays that can legitimately claim to have changed the world. Perhaps Apartheid South Africa's greatest work of art, "The Island" was instrumental in changing international attitudes towards South Africa in the 1970s. It is the story of two political prisoners Winston and John, who while incarcerated on South Africa’s notorious Robben Island prison, prepare a performance of Sophocles' "Antigone" for other inmates. The play examines the bonds and tensions between cellmates as the performance approaches, and "Antigone" becomes a powerful testament to individual human resilience in the face of systematic injustice.
