On Saturday, September 16, 2006 the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department will showcase its first inaugural Mariachi Festival. The program demonstrates a diversity that reflects the very nature of music itself and explores the history of mariachi and the emotional songs that journeyed from the countryside to the concert hall. The word "mariachi" originates in the Coca Indians’ language meaning musician." Mariachi music comes from the convergence of various cultural forces in Mexico over several hundred years and the music has become a staple of Arizona culture. Today, most people recognize mariachi as traditional "Mexican Folk Music" with a unique sound and group. From the 1600's to the late 1700’s, the music transformed as it merged with Spanish, Indian and Negro influences to create a national music expression, and a unifying symbol in the fight for independence. Around 1840, Mariachi bands began to use the harp, violins and a guitarra de golpe, which set the stage for the beginning of the modern mariachi group. The music itself has stayed traditional and become more contemporary at the same time. A great example of this is shown in the performance of the Mariachi Divas, who will headline the festival. This mariachi is an all female group with a unique, multi-cultural ensemble, represented by women of Mexican, Cuban, Samoan, Costa Rican, Panamanian, Japanese, Colombian, Honduran, Swiss and Anglo decent. Although their roots and foundation are mariachi, the group has added extra elements to reflect their diversity such as timbales, congas, bongos, cajon, tambora, percussion, tres, and flute to their traditional mariachi ensemble. When these non-traditional instruments blend with the ‘traditional’ mariachi instruments there are no limitations to what styles the Mariachi Divas can perform and have even created their own style of music which has been labeled “ranchengue” a unique combination of a ranchera played in merengue fashion. Along with the mariachis, ballet folklorico performances will visually stimulate you with their colorful attire and amazing dance steps throughout the day. A children’s fun zone featuring a rock wall, giant slide and obstacle course, arts & crafts, games, face painters, and clowns will entertain your children while you enjoy the cultural experience of the festival. Tickets for the fun zone includes; unlimited play for $5.00 per person. Vendors will provide food and crafts that reflect the cultural diversity of this innovative festival. Pre-sale tickets are available for purchase at the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department (3936 Chestnut St.) and all community centers. On-site ticket sales will be available. The Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department would like to thank our partners of the Mariachi Festival, the Riverside Downtown Partnership, Charter Communications, Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Chicano Student Program of the University of Riverside, Latino Network, Mí Tortilla, and Levi’s Landscaping.
